We had the pleasure of chatting with Jamie, a mom of two boys, about her family’s amazing worldschooling adventure. After realizing how fragile life can be, they decided to focus on living in the moment and giving their kids the incredible gift of learning through real-world experiences. Jamie shared what inspired them to take this leap, how they make education work while traveling, and all the ways this journey has positively impacted their family.

Meet Jamie and Her Family
Hi! I'm Jamie, and my husband is Jerry. We have two boys, Jeremiah (14) and Walker (10). We have been traveling full-time since the boys were just 5 and 8 years old. Our family loves nature, hiking, and anything adventurous. We enjoy learning about history and culture through travel and meeting new people.
Our travels have changed significantly since we began in 2019. Initially, we traveled in our camper and rented out our home. We wanted to test if full-time travel was right for us, while having a safety net. After 14 months in the camper, we stored it and traveled internationally for 18 months, living out of backpacks. We often moved every other night, exploring each country for about 4 to 5 weeks. During this time, we sold our home, which funded our adventures, allowing Jerry to focus on family rather than work.
Once our funds ran low, we returned to our camper in the US. Jerry resumed work, and we traveled this way for another three years, moving every two weeks. Eventually, we sold the camper again and shifted to a slower pace, staying in each location for a month or more to truly enjoy local life.

How We Fund Our Worldschooling Lifestyle
Jerry is a software developer and contractor with his own business. He is currently working on a startup with friends, which often requires him to work 12 to 14 hours a day. Thankfully, he can work from anywhere, so we ensure our Airbnbs have solid Wi-Fi and a comfortable workspace for him.
The Inspiration Behind Our Worldschooling Journey
When our boys were just 1 and 4, we helped a friend whose 3-year-old had stage 4 cancer. We welcomed them into our home to support her as a single mom. Witnessing her struggle made us realise how fragile life can be. Tragically, she passed away, which prompted me to rethink everything about parenting and the lives I wanted for my children.
After losing other loved ones unexpectedly, we decided to change our lives completely. I didn’t want my kids to endure miserable days at school while Jerry was stuck at a desk in our basement. I wanted their childhoods to be filled with wonder, learning, and memories. I wanted us to live a life where, if any of us were to die tomorrow, we wouldn’t have any regrets.

Our Educational Experiences on the Road
Yes! We have participated in various education hubs and online schools while traveling. We spent six weeks at The Hive in the Dominican Republic and joined two separate Roam Base groups in Gran Canaria and the French Alps. Both experiences were fantastic!
In terms of online education, we've used numerous apps rather than traditional schools. We've explored IXL, Beast Academy, Art of Problem Solving, Prodigy, Brilliant, and more. Currently, Jeremiah is enrolled in two dual enrollment courses through the University of Arizona. He is also taking an online entrepreneurial course called The Journey, learning to code with Codedex, studying algebra with AoPS, and learning French with a tutor here in Morocco, where we are staying for two months.
Walker is taking math with Beast Academy, a typing course, writes in his journal daily, and is also learning French. Both boys are avid readers and have their own Kindles, which they read during any free time. They have also enjoyed taking some Outschool classes!
A Day in Our Life
A typical day varies depending on our location. Usually, we wake up, and the boys start their schoolwork right away. I make breakfast while Jerry begins his work. We work until lunchtime, and then the boys and I venture out in the afternoons to explore and get some exercise.
On weekends, our routine is similar, but Jerry joins us for adventures. We often return home in time for dinner, allowing me to cook and save money.

Overcoming Challenges in Our Travels
One of the biggest challenges we face is the feeling of not belonging anywhere. While we don’t want to return to the States, we miss our family. We are ready to settle down, but nothing feels quite right, so we keep moving and exploring.
Internet connectivity can also be an issue for Jerry, even when it’s promised to be good. However, we try to view challenges as growth opportunities that help us build resilience.
Lessons Learned Through Travel
Our boys have learned so much from our travels! They have prayed in mosques in Morocco, Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, and churches in Italy. They’ve surfed in Costa Rica, shot archery in Ireland, and skied in Bulgaria. They’ve explored Roman history by walking through ruins in Slovenia, Tunisia, and Turkey.
They’ve studied the Muisca, Aztec, and Mayan civilizations and learned about the impact of the conquistadors in Mexico and Colombia. The best part of travel is that it makes learning fun and relevant. They remember their lessons and have developed a genuine thirst for knowledge.
Most importantly, they’ve learned that people are amazing all over the world. They understand that xenophobia is ridiculous and that there are always two sides to a story. They’ve learned not to judge people based on their government or religion.
Our Favourite Destinations
This is a tough question for any traveler! I would say Ecuador, Finland, and Iceland stand out for their natural beauty and adventure. Meanwhile, Jordan, Turkey, and Tunisia are memorable for their rich history and wonderful people.

Enhancing Our Worldschooling Experience
One way to improve our worldschooling experience would be to have our family and friends join us. We truly miss our loved ones and would love for them to come along on our adventures.
Additionally, having steady hobbies would be beneficial, but many of our interests aren’t very travel-friendly. Jeremiah is passionate about rocketry, I enjoy ceramics, and Jerry is interested in woodworking. Unfortunately, these hobbies are challenging to pursue while on the move. Still, we keep busy with hiking and other adventures.
