Discover La Herradura: A Hidden Gem for Families

Updated: Oct 25, 2025

Imagine sipping a refreshing glass of Sangria on the beach while your kids play with new friends at the beach playground. Welcome to La Herradura, a coastal town in Spain that embodies the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.

This charming destination is an hour's drive from both Malaga Airport and Granada, making it easily accessible for families. Plus, it's just a stone's throw from the bustling towns of Nerja and Almuñécar, where you can find everything you need, including delightful second-hand bookstores with English children's books.

La Herradura is a haven for families seeking a stress-free travel experience. During the summer, the town comes alive with beachgoers, but in winter, it attracts families from Northern Europe who flock to enjoy the warm winter days by the sea. This incredibly safe town is designed with families in mind, featuring zebra crossings every few meters, allowing kids to ride their bicycles freely along the main road.

The beach itself is a treasure trove of natural wonders. It's a rocky shoreline where, if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of a school of dolphins. We were thrilled to spot a rare Humboldt Penguin during our visit! The bay's unique horseshoe shape gives La Herradura its name, which translates to "horseshoe" in Spanish.

For traveling families, La Herradura offers several van parking sites like Camping Cerro Gordo, often filled with families on the move. There are also plenty of options for short-term rentals, and online Facebook and WhatsApp groups can connect you with local real estate agents for longer-term stays. Feel free to reach out to us for more information on local contacts.

While prices have risen recently due to an influx of foreign families choosing to live or stay longer term, we still believe La Herradura can be an affordable destination for those looking to immerse themselves in Spanish culture. With a bit of planning, families can find great deals on accommodations and enjoy the local lifestyle without breaking the bank.

Education is also well-catered for in La Herradura. The town is home to a well-regarded democratic school called The Tree School, though it does have a long waiting list. Alternatively, there are beach schools where children can learn while playing on the beach or at the nearby marina. These schools are perfect for younger kids, and parents are welcome to join in. For families considering a longer stay, there's a wonderful local Spanish school just across from the beach, offering full Spanish immersion for children. This is an excellent opportunity for kids to dive into the language and culture, making La Herradura an ideal choice for families seeking a truly immersive experience.

For families with teenagers, there's a WhatsApp group that organizes weekly meetups. If you prefer a more flexible schedule, La Herradura offers weekly beach meetups, and the large playground opposite the beach is a popular spot for traveling families to connect. Don't miss the local man who delivers crates of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables at great prices.

For exploration days, consider driving to Orgiva and exploring the picturesque towns of Capileira, Bubion, and Pampaneira. Nerja boasts an excellent skate park and a new dynamic playground, perfect for kids with energy to burn. And for a dose of history, a day trip to the breathtaking Alhambra in Granada is an unforgettable experience.

La Herradura is more than just a destination; it's a community waiting to be discovered. Whether you're looking for relaxation, adventure, or a blend of both, this charming coastal town has something for everyone. So pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready to make unforgettable memories with your family in La Herradura.

I'm so happy to read this post. I went to the "wonderful local Spanish school just across from the beach" for half of third grade way back in the '90s, and I'm now looking to take my son there. Does anyone have any contact info for the school or know how to get access to their calendar to see when they're open?
