Hello friends! I'm thrilled to tell you about our amazing time in Medellín, Colombia. This lively city has captivated us with its hospitality, culture, and countless adventure opportunities. As a world schooling family, we were keen to discover a destination that provided both learning and enjoyment, and Medellín truly exceeded our expectations.
Accommodation: El Poblado and Provenza
We chose to settle in El Poblado which proved to be excellent decision as we had really missed the amenities which come with city living. The neighborhood is vibrant with contemporary cafes and bars, funky restaurants, and a dynamic atmosphere.
El Poblado is especially known for its luxurious hotels (The click Clack hotel) and lively nightlife, but we steered clear of Parque Lleras at night with the children because of its party atmosphere.
Provenza, with its golden blocks of commercial activity, provided easy access to shopping and dining options and is also considered a great choice by travelling families.

Food: A Culinary Delight
Oh, the food! Medellín's culinary scene is both incredible and affordable. We enjoyed traditional Colombian dishes like bandeja paisa at local eateries, and for a taste of international cuisine, we discovered gems like Pelavacas for birria tacos and Pizzas Garage for affordable pizzas. And let's not forget the Chococono from Mimo's—a chocolate-dipped ice cream cone that the kids just loved!
Galleries and Street Art: Inspiring Creativity
Medellín is renowned for its vibrant street art, particularly in Comuna 13. This once troubled neighborhood has been transformed into a thriving arts district, where graffiti murals tell stories of resilience and hope. We booked a guided tour, which was a great way to explore the area safely and learn about its history and culture. The street art here is incredibly inspiring for children, teaching them about transformation and community.

Comuna 13: A Day of History and Art
Comuna 13 was a highlight of our trip. The area is steeped in history, and its transformation is a testament to the power of art and community. The famous escaleras eléctricas (electric stairs) and vibrant murals made for an engaging day out. Tours typically last about three hours and provide a safe and educational experience for children.

Parque Explora: A Hub for Curiosity
For kids, Parque Explora is an absolute must-visit. This interactive science museum combines entertainment with education, featuring over 300 exhibits, a massive freshwater aquarium, and a planetarium. It's an ideal place for children to engage in hands-on learning while having fun. Admission is affordable, and the park is easily accessible via the Universidad metro station.
Other Family-Friendly Activities
Parque Norte: Located in the north of Medellín, this amusement park offers a variety of rides suitable for all ages, including a real airplane with a flight simulator. While not as large as major theme parks, it provides a fun-filled day for kids.
Shopping Malls: Medellín's malls, such as Santa Fe and El Tesoro, offer extensive kids' play areas, arcades, and entertainment options. Santa Fe boasts a bowling alley, movie theater, and arcade called Happy City, perfect for keeping little ones entertained. Viva Park in Envigado features an outdoor amusement park with a ferris wheel.
Jardín Botánico: This serene oasis in the heart of Medellín is free and open every day. It's home to over 4,500 flowers and hundreds of bird species, making it a great spot for a family stroll.
Parque Arví: Accessible by a tram, this natural park offers hiking trails, birdwatching, and an adventure ropes course for kids over six years old.
El Pueblito Paisa: Located on Cerro Nutibara, this miniature town offers panoramic views of Medellín and is a great place for kids to learn about Colombian culture.
Museo del Agua: This museum is free for children under five and offers interactive water-themed exhibits.
Fiestas de las Flores: If you're visiting in early August, don't miss this festival, which includes citywide concerts, flower expos, and a pet parade that kids will adore.
The People and Safety
One of the most striking aspects of our trip was the warmth of the Colombian people. Everyone we met was extremely friendly and welcoming. We didn't encounter any issues during our stay and felt safe, but it's worth noting that there seems to be a significant drug problem in the city center. We avoided walking in these areas and opted for taxis or Uber instead.
Conclusion
Medellín is a city that seamlessly blends culture, education, and fun, making it an excellent choice for world schooling families. Whether you're exploring the vibrant neighborhoods, enjoying local cuisine, or immersing yourselves in the city's rich history and art, Medellín has something for everyone. So pack your bags, grab your sunscreen, and get ready to make unforgettable memories with your family in this incredible city!
